The finer details: Why door handles and hinges shouldn’t be overlooked

Your internal doors are an essential feature of your home. However, as well as providing a practical function, they also serve as an intricate design aspect and are part and parcel of your overall design scheme. That’s why the importance of door furniture as a contributor to that overall finish should never be underestimated. Here, we consider why the finer details of your internal door – including handles and hinges – should take up just as much priority in the planning stages as the door itself.

Handles to make an impression

They’re often considered a necessity with little thought put into their inclusion but there’s so much to be said for door handles. Choose wisely and they can beautifully complement an internal door and be in-keeping with design of the rest of the room, whether that’s period character or impossibly modern chic. There’s a door handle for every trend.

Pay attention to the size, type and design of each handle you’re considering and ensure your chosen ones fit with the overall style and feel of your property. Think about whether you want statement handles throughout the home or if you’d prefer a degree of uniformity. Victorian or Georgian homes are traditional in their design and would look completely mismatched with a modern-looking lever handle on a back plate, for example. Most properties will be fairly suited to the versatile lever on rose, which can enhance minimalist or bold style. Alternatively, your interior style might be more suited to the endless design possibilities that come with door knobs. Door handles, rather than knobs, are considered the more common choice thanks to the greater level of grip they offer. However, door knobs are sometimes more decorative and make a real statement if that’s what you prefer.

Choosing the material and finish
There’s simply no shortage to the vast amount of materials and finishes on offer – and again, you’ll choose based on the style of your property and existing decor. A chrome finish looks perfectly in place in both modern and traditional properties as it’s a classic material, while brass is well-matched with period properties or is said to be compatible with Art Deco themes. Stainless steel handles will forever remain a popular choice thanks to the material’s resistance to atmospheric conditions. Meanwhile, glass is becoming increasingly common for its irresistibly contemporary aesthetic.

Hidden hinges for a seamless look

Hinges have always been an integral part of a door’s working mechanism – but that doesn’t mean you want the unsightly hardware in plain view. Concealed hinges provide an innovative solution that enables you to maintain clean lines and flush finishes within your interior design. This type of hinge disappears from view completely when the door is closed. They can also be 3D adjusted in all directions to regulate in the case of building movement. Consider hidden hinges and other unique features to really make a statement with internal doors within your home.
